Torres Announces $650K Grant for Scholarships to Disadvantaged Graduate Students

June 9, 2020
Press Release

POMONA, CA—Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) today announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is awarding a $649,950 grant to Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona. The Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) program will fund scholarships to graduate students with traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.

“While the Inland Empire has some of the brightest minds around, not everyone starts off on equal footing in life,” Representative Torres said. “The funds I’m announcing today will help address that disparity by ensuring Western University of Health Sciences can offer the financial support and opportunity its graduate students need. Not only will this grant help more people within our community afford their education, but it will also help ensure our leading medical professionals reflect the diversity of the region they serve.”

The SDS program promotes diversity among health students and practitioners by providing scholarships to full-time graduate students with financial need from disadvantaged backgrounds enrolled in programs like those offered by Western University of Health Sciences.

Torres is a member of the House Appropriations Committee, which is responsible for appropriating federal spending.
