Rep. Torres, Community Leaders Tour Fairplex ORR Facility For Unaccompanied Minors
POMONA – Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) today led a group of 14 local officials, community activists, and healthcare service professionals from Pomona, Los Angeles County, and across the Inland Empire on a tour of the new temporary Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) Emergency Intake Facility for unaccompanied minors at the Fairplex in Pomona.
Congresswoman Torres, herself a Guatemalan immigrant whose Congressional District includes the Fairplex complex, released the following statement:
"As someone who came here as a child from Central America, I'm incredibly proud to see Pomona residents welcome these vulnerable children with open arms," Rep. Norma J. Torres said. "These kids endured harrowing conditions in their home countries and survived the dangerous trek to get here – they deserve the dignity and safety that I know our community will provide while ORR finds each one of them a family member or foster home."
This was Rep. Torres' fifth tour of an ORR facility in the last two months. She visited Carrizo Springs, Texas on March 24th; San Diego Convention Center on March 28th; and both Fort Bliss and the CHS Trail House Shelter near El Paso, Texas on April 5th.
"The Biden Administration has shown its commitment to meeting the needs that these kids have, from physical and mental health, to on-site education, to social services and much more," Rep. Torres continued. "I have every hope and expectation that this new facility will do the same, and I look forward to working with ORR to ensure we are delivering the best care possible to these children for as long as this location remains open."
Torres is the only Central American serving in Congress, and the Co-Chair of the Central America Caucus. Torres also sits on the House Appropriations Committee, and has leveraged her position to bring accountability to the Northern Triangle by withholding aid from the corrupt central governments, and shining a light on corrupt leaders in the region that contribute to migration. Rep. Torres y líderes comunitarios recorren las instalaciones del Fairplex ORR para menores no acompañados
POMONA - La congresista Norma J. Torres (CA-35) dirigió hoy a un grupo de 14 líderes locales, activistas comunitarios, y profesionales de servicios de la salud de Pomona y el condado de Los Ángeles y de todo el Inland Empire en un recorrido por la nueva oficina temporal para refugiados (ORR) para menores no acompañados en Fairplex en Pomona.
La congresista Torres, ella misma una inmigrante guatemalteca cuyo distrito incluye el complejo Fairplex, emitió la siguiente declaración:
"Como alguien que vino aquí cuando era niña desde Centroamérica, estoy increíblemente orgulloso de ver a los residentes de Pomona dar la bienvenida a estos niños vulnerables con los brazos abiertos," dijo la congresista Norma J.
