Congresswoman Torres Votes No on Republican Continuing Resolution that Threatens Health Care and Fiscal Responsibility
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) voted against the Republican stop-gap federal funding bill – the Continuing Resolution (CR) – citing deep concerns over reckless provisions that undermine critical health care services and grant unchecked spending authority to President-elect Donald Trump for the next two years.
“This Republican funding bill betrays the American people and represents hypocrisy of the highest degree – giving the incoming President unchecked spending power and the ability to expand his tax scam which only benefits the ultra rich at the expense of working class families,” said Rep. Torres. “It guts childhood cancer research by $190 million, abandons breast and cervical cancer detection funding, and down syndrome research. Republicans even cut over $1 billion from food stamps right before Christmas and the holiday season. The American people deserve better.”
Impact on Health Care and Families:
- Abandons breast and cervical cancer preventative services.
- Cuts over $1 billion to the federal food stamps program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
- Cuts substance abuse treatment funding, and key foster youth support.
- Guts childhood cancer research by $190 million.
Attack on Jobs and Workforce Development:
- Eliminates funding for youth workforce investment programs designed to keep students in school and help youth facing homelessness.
- Allows the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) to end, dismantling federal funding for youth pathways and work-based learning opportunities.
- Abandons efforts to support domestic manufacturing and supply chain resilience through job creating programs.
Unchecked Spending Powers:
The proposed CR also contains provisions that grant President-elect Trump and his party unchecked discretionary spending authorities, raising the debt limit for two years until right past the midterm elections.
“This bill is not a solution; it’s a political stunt,” added Rep. Torres. “It fails to meet the needs of families in CA-35 and across the country, and it opens the door to reckless governance that puts our future at risk. We need real bipartisan solutions that prioritize the people we serve, not partisan gamesmanship.”
Congresswoman Torres remains committed to advocating for responsible governance, protecting health care services, and ensuring fiscal responsibility for the constituents of CA-35.
