Congresswoman Torres Votes to Prevent Government Shutdown, Supports Critical Investments for CA-35
Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Norma J. Torres (CA-35), a senior member of the Appropriations committee that oversees all federal funding, voted in favor of a bipartisan Continuing Resolution (CR) to keep the federal government open and ensure essential services continue for families across the nation. The legislation includes robust funding to address disaster relief, key health programs, and child care that benefit the Inland Empire. This bill also includes no extension of the debt limit.
“Yet again, Democrats had to rescue the American people from another disastrous Republican government shutdown. This vote was about keeping our government open and protecting families across the Inland Empire and the nation affected by recent natural disasters,” said Rep. Torres. “Unlike the failed, Musk-led Republican efforts prior, this bill delivers much needed disaster recovery funds, strengthens child care, and supports economic growth across the country without giving President-elect Donald Trump a blank check to drive our nation deeper into debt. The 11th hour crisis we’ve witnessed this week is a warning sign of the chaos to come if Speaker Johnson, the incoming President, and their puppeteer, Elon Musk don’t learn to govern with a bipartisan majority going forward. The American people deserve better.”
Key Investments in the CR:
-
Disaster Relief: $100 billion for disaster relief, including:
-
$29 billion for FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund.
-
$12 billion for Community Development Block Grants and $8 billion for emergency road and bridge projects.
-
$1.5 billion for Army Corps of Engineers projects, including water infrastructure improvements.
-
$50 million annually through 2027 for the Drinking Water Infrastructure Risk and Resilience Program to protect water systems from cyber-attacks.
-
-
Supporting Families:
-
$500 million for child care assistance.
- Over $1 billion for community care clinics.
-
“This CR is an important step, but it’s not the end of the road,” said Rep. Torres. “We must continue to fight for long-term solutions that address the climate crisis or we will continue to see a ballooning disaster budget and must ensure families have the resources they need to thrive.”
Congresswoman Torres remains committed to responsible governance that delivers results for CA-35 and the nation.
