Congresswoman Norma Torres Calls for Subcommittee to Address Capitol Security and Legislative Oversight
Sends Letter to Chairman Calling for Bipartisan Action to New January 6 Report
Washington D.C. – Today, Rep. Norma J. Torres (CA-35), Ranking Member of the House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight, issued a statement expressing her disappointment with the actions and priorities of the Subcommittee on Oversight Chairman Barry Loudermilk. The Congresswoman sent a letter to Chairman Loudermilk to highlight her concerns raised after the release of the second report on the January 6, 2021, insurrection, which ignored elements of the legislative branch and Capitol security and seeks to undo the bipartisan work of the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol.
"With only three session days remaining in the 118th Congress, it is deeply concerning that the Subcommittee on Oversight has neglected the critical issues facing the legislative branch and Capitol security. Instead of focusing on the pressing safety challenges confronting Members of Congress and Capitol staff, this Subcommittee has spent taxpayer dollars defending the President-elect and spreading baseless conspiracy theories about the January 6th Select Committee.”
“The security risks facing the Capitol have only grown more urgent, especially after recent incidents, including a near-assassination attempt on the President-elect. Yet, rather than addressing real threats to our democracy, this Subcommittee has chosen to prioritize partisan attacks that offer no benefit to the American people.”
“The United States Capitol Police (USCP) and other legislative branch agencies are struggling with rising threats, officer wellness concerns, and ongoing security challenges. These are the issues we should be addressing, not distractions rooted in conspiracy theories. It is time for the Subcommittee to refocus its efforts on tangible, bipartisan solutions that ensure the safety and security of all Members of Congress and the integrity of our institutions. As we move into the 119th Congress, I urge my colleagues to work together to address the critical security needs of the Capitol. The safety of our democracy should always come before political gamesmanship."
