Torres Statement on Ninth Summit of the Americas
WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Norma J. Torres (CA-35) released the following statement on the Ninth Summit of the Americas:
"The ninth Summit of the Americas is an important occasion to plan and address the challenges that our region faces, together. From migration to economic development to climate change, the nations of our region are all interconnected with each other, in most cases quite literally, and our answers must be developed in cooperation.
"That is why I am deeply troubled by and disappointed in those leaders who have chosen not to attend the Summit of the Americas. This meeting is a real opportunity to set a plan in action and make real change to improve conditions in the region, in particular the issues driving the migration crisis. We must come together to combat corruption and promote democracy, accountability, and the rule of law – but those who refused to attend have chosen to forego these goals. Together, we have the opportunity to promote oversight, transparency, and accountability. And the U.S., along with those who are in Los Angeles this week, will continue to work toward these ends.
"It is especially poignant that the Summit is being held in Los Angeles, which is home to a vast population of immigrants, many of whom still have families in the region. Remittances make up a substantial portion of some of these nation's economies, but they refuse to take into consideration the needs and issues of these communities that continue to contribute so much even after they leave the country.
"Democratic values are a critical component of addressing our regional challenges, and one that is increasingly under attack. Those countries who did not come to the table must reckon with the fact they have decided to put short-term political points above the wellbeing of their citizens. They have chosen an argument about invitations over the value of discussion and debate. The countries who did not participate in the summit are not snubbing the United States – they are forsaking their own people.
"To move forward and enable progress, we must all work together to uphold rule of law, democracy, and human rights. I implore the nations who did not participate to take a hard look at their priorities and take concrete action to demonstrate their commitment to working together toward a safer, more prosperous region."
