Rep. Torres Passes Military Education Bill Out of House Unanimously
WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) today passed the G.I. & Veteran Education Empowerment Act – or GIVE Act – (H.R. 4852) out of the House of Representatives by a vote of 412 to 0.
Torres' bill expands the G.I. Comparison Tool – an online resource intended to provide service members with the information they need to find a school that's right for them. The GIVE Act adds the option for veterans to search for Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges, religious-affiliated schools, and gender-specific institutions.
"I'm glad my colleagues on both sides of the aisle joined me today in support of this common-sense bill to help more service members make the most of their G.I. benefits," Rep. Torres said. "Expanding the choices available through the G.I. Comparison Tool will help the program be more responsive to user needs, and finding the right community can help keep a student on-track to earn their degree. As the mother of an Air Force veteran, there's nothing more important to me than ensuring every service member receives the education they need and deserve, and today the House of Representatives spoke with one voice, unanimously, to agree with me."
Congresswoman Torres represents part of California's Inland Empire, a region with numerous Hispanic Serving Institutions, including Cal Poly Pomona, Chaffey College, California State University – San Bernardino, and the University of California – Riverside.
