Rep. Torres Calls for Resignation of LA Councilmembers Cedillo, De Leon and Martinez
Pomona, CA- Today, Congresswoman Norma Torres released the following statement in response to the recorded statements made by Los Angeles City Councilmembers Nury Martinez, Kevin De Leon, and Gil Cedillo:
"This abuse of power makes me sick to my stomach. Listening to these recordings, it's hard to recognize the people behind the racist rants. Most hurtful is the fact that it came out of the mouths of three of only four Latinos Councilmembers serving in a city where Latinos make up 50% of the population.
"There is no apology that can cure the hurt this has caused not only to the residents of Los Angeles but to everyone whose humanity has been threatened in the past by ignorance and racism. There is no leave of absence that will rebuild trust.
"My heart is broken. I ask that the Councilmembers involved do the only honorable thing left and resign immediately."
