Congresswoman Norma Torres Commemorates Indigenous Peoples’ Day
POMONA, CALIFORNIA– Today, Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) released the following statement recognizing Indigenous Peoples' Day:
"On this day, we should honor the traditions and contributions of the true first people of this continent," said Congresswoman Torres. "For too long, we have failed to honor indigenous communities, and the true roots of our own nation. We must also commit ourselves to doing far more to make this country a fairer and more just place for tribal communities. As we work towards that goal, let us use this day to remember our obligations, and recommit to addressing inequities."
Congresswoman Torres has introduced legislation to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day since 2019. In the 117th Congress, Congresswoman Torres introduced the Indigenous Peoples' Day Act, H.R. 5473, which would federally recognize and establish Indigenous Peoples' Day as a federal holiday. Since introduction, the legislation has garnered 83 House cosponsors, the largest number of cosponsors to date.
