Congresswoman Torres Announces City of Fontana Receives $2 Million in Federal Grant to Improve Safety, Climate, and Mobility
Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) – a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced today the delivery of $2 million in federal grant funding to the City of Fontana for the development of technological advancements to improve transportation safety and efficiency. The funding will be allocated to the Leveraging Advanced Adaptive Signal Timing for Freight to Improve Safety, Climate, and Mobility program to develop smart traffic signal technology. This grant award from the Department of Transportation – made possible by the FY2023 annual funding bill – will address transportation insecurity, social and health vulnerabilities, and climate resilience with the goal of preventing future roadway death and serious injury for Fontana residents.
“Our communities deserve safe, high-quality transportation infrastructure that ensures the safe and efficient transport of passengers and freight cargo while mitigating climate impacts,” said Congresswoman Norma Torres. “This grant means less waiting times at train signal crossings and better coordination between passenger and cargo trains. This investment ensures a better future for Fontana’s commercial success and for rail passengers throughout the Inland Empire.
Congresswoman Torres serves on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development (THUD), which oversees government funding for transportation and other key infrastructure programs. In October, she introduced the Pedestrian Hazard, Awareness and Safety Expansion (PHASE) Act to address the rising pedestrian accidents and fatalities in regions like the Inland Empire.
