Congresswoman Norma J. Torres Releases Statement on the Announced Closure of Pomona Emergency Intake Site
POMONA – Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) released the following statement in response to the news that the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) will close its Emergency Intake Site (EIS) for unaccompanied minors in Pomona by November 9th, with the last minors expected to leave the facility by the end of the month.
"I am pleased to hear the news that all the children in the Pomona EIS have been successfully reunited with their families or otherwise placed in secure living situations," said Rep. Torres. "I'm thankful to everyone in the community who contributed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for these children."
"It is heartwarming that our community was able to care for these children when they most needed it," continued Rep. Torres. "But my ultimate goal is that we address the root issues that compel people to risk their lives to migrate to the United States so that we no longer need emergency facilities like this one. The vast majority of children in this shelter came from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, countries that are unfortunately plagued by corruption and violence. I will continue to work in Congress to address these problems so that Central Americans can live safely and have a promising future in their home countries. At the same time, I will push for immigration reform to treat those who do arrive safely and with dignity, as we did here in Pomona."
Congresswoman Torres has frequently visited the facility since it opened, and previously led two Congressional tours of the facility to meet with the staff and hear from the children in order to ensure they received the best possible care. The Pomona EIS has served more than 9500 children and reunited more than 8200 families to date since it opened in April of this year.

POMONA - Congresista Norma J. Torres (CA-35) emitió la siguiente declaración en respuesta a la noticia de que la Oficina de Reasentamiento de Refugiados (ORR) cerrará su Sitio de Admisión de Emergencia (EIS) para menores no acompañados en Pomona para el 9 de noviembre, y se espera que los últimos menores salgan del centro a finales de mes.
"Me complace escuchar la noticia de que todos los niños del EIS de Pomona se han reunido con éxito con sus familias o se han colocado de otra manera en situaciones de vida seguras", dijo Rep. Torres. "Estoy agradecida a todos en la comunidad que contribuyeron a crear un entorno seguro y acogedor para estos niños".
"Es reconfortante que nuestra comunidad haya podido cuidar a estos niños cuando más lo necesitaban", continuó la representante Torres. "Pero mi objetivo final es que abordemos los problemas fundamentales que obligan a las personas a arriesgar sus vidas para migrar a los Estados Unidos para que ya no necesitemos instalaciones de emergencia como esta. La gran mayoría de los niños en este refugio provenían de Guatemala, Honduras y El Salvador, países que lamentablemente están plagados de corrupción y violencia. Continuaré trabajando en el Congreso para abordar estos problemas para que los centroamericanos puedan vivir seguros y tener un futuro prometedor en sus países de origen. Al mismo tiempo, presionaré por una reforma migratoria para tratar a aquellos que llegan sanos y salvos con dignidad, como hicimos aquí en Pomona".
La congresista Torres ha visitado con frecuencia el centro desde que abrió, y anteriormente lidero dos grupos de congresistas estadounidenses, en una delegación del Congreso, por el centro para reunirse con el personal y escuchar a los niños con el fin de garantizar que recibieran la mejor atención posible. El Pomona EIS ha atendido a más de 9500 niños y ha reunido a más de 8200 familias hasta la fecha desde su apertura en abril de este año.
