Torres Statement on Resignation of Guatemalan President
ONTARIO, CA – Today, Rep. Norma J. Torres (D-Pomona) issued the following statement in response to the resignation of Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina:
"Today's announcement represents an important step forward for Guatemala's future. I commend the Commission Against Impunity for the vital role it has played in bringing accountability to the Guatemalan government and proving that no one is above the law However, it is the people who took to the streets and demanded more from their government who have been the true catalyst for change.
"They proved they will no longer accept corruption as a fact of life. They sent a message to current and future elected officials that the people are watching, and the country's leaders can no longer expect to get away with taking advantage of the public's trust.
"With yesterday's ruling and today's resignation, the country turns the page. Whatever the outcome of the upcoming elections, the Guatemalan people have risen up and through their continued engagement will keep holding their leaders to a higher standard.
"Guatemala continues to face significant challenges, from a struggling economy to ongoing violence, but through a trustworthy, responsive, and accountable government, the country will truly be capable of tackling these issues to bring about lasting change."
Torres, the first Guatemalan-born Member of Congress, represents California's 35th congressional district.
