Torres Calls for Immigration Reform in Light of Migrant Deaths in San Antonio
WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) released the following statement in response to the news that at least 50 immigrants were left for dead in the back of a semi-truck in San Antonio, Texas.
"This is a horrific tragedy. It's a moral failure by America that immigrants are forced to risk – and in too many cases, lose – their lives in an attempt to seek safety inside our borders. It's long past time to address the corrupt leaders whose citizens are forced to flee their homes, and reform our immigration system to welcome those seeking asylum and citizenship.
"We must remove barriers to naturalization in the United States, so that hard-working, law abiding immigrants aren't forced to jump through endless bureaucratic hoops and spend thousands of dollars just to obtain citizenship. But we can't solve this crisis alone, either. The leaders of the countries that have the most people fleeing must also come to the table to address this problem - which we had an opportunity to do just a few weeks ago at the Summit of the Americas, which those very leaders declined to attend.
"There is no reason for anyone to die on their journey to seek safety in our country. Immigrants deserve to be treated with dignity and shouldn't have to fear for their lives once they arrive in America. I'm devastated for these victims and families, and will continue to fight for safe and humane immigration policies."

"Esta es una tragedia horrible. Es un fracaso moral de los Estados Unidos que los inmigrantes se vean obligados a arriesgar, y en muchos casos perder, sus vidas en un intento de buscar seguridad dentro de nuestras fronteras. Ya es hora de abordar a los líderes corruptos cuyos ciudadanos se ven obligados a huir de sus hogares y reformar nuestro sistema de inmigración para dar la bienvenida a quienes buscan asilo y ciudadanía.
"Debemos eliminar las barreras a la naturalización en los Estados Unidos, para que los inmigrantes trabajadores y respetuosos de la ley no se vean obligados a pasar por interminables aros burocráticos y gastar miles de dólares solo para obtener la ciudadanía.
