Rep. Torres: Articles of Impeachment Hold Criminal Administration Accountable

December 10, 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) released the following statement today as House Democrats released two articles of impeachment against President Donald J. Trump.

The President, who withheld much-needed military aid from Ukraine to coerce them into investigating Trump's perceived political rival, is charged with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

"The articles of impeachment announced today hold President Trump accountable for the criminal activity and obstruction that Americans have witnessed with their own eyes," Rep. Torres said. "The Trump-Ukraine Impeachment Inquiry Report released last week outlines in meticulous detail how this president placed his own political interests above the security of our nation and our moral standing in the global community. As public servants sworn into office with an oath to serve and defend the Constitution, this Congress has no choice but to act."

Congresswoman Torres has publicly supported an impeachment inquiry into President Trump since the Mueller Report was released in April 2019.

"President Trump welcomed foreign interference in the 2016 election, and his Ukraine coercion scheme makes clear that he intends to welcome it again in 2020," Rep. Torres continued. "The American people are counting on us to defend our democracy right now, and ensure our system of government remains by the people, and for the people."
