Congresswoman Torres Urges Secretary Buttigieg to Improve Accessible Infrastructure and Transportation in the Inland Empire

Highlights FY25 Priorities Investing in Infrastructure That Create Access to Affordable and Reliable Transportation

Washington, D.C. — Today Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) – a senior member of the House Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee sent a letter to Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, highlighting her FY25 Community Funding Projects. These projects prioritize investments in access to safer, affordable, and more reliable transportation options like better bus service and bike infrastructure improvements. The Secretary is responsible for ensuring the implementation of the funding that Congress secured through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, and these projects are key to building up our nation’s transportation systems to improve access to jobs, housing, and recreational spaces for all Americans.

“Inland Empire residents deserve to have reliable roads, high quality pedestrian safety and transportation options. Providing funding to infrastructure projects that ensure accessible and dependable transportation options for my constituents is one of my biggest priorities for this next round of Community Funding Projects,” said Congresswoman Norma Torres. “It's essential that the funding from President Biden's landmark bills are appropriately distributed, especially in regions like the Inland Empire, which are historically shortchanged. From crumbling train stations to failing water pumps, Inland Empire communities are desperate for investments in local infrastructure and I look forward to partnering with the Secretary to make these projects come to fruition.”

Background: Congresswoman Torres has advocated for investments in infrastructure by:

  • Introducing the Thriving Communities Act of 2024 (HR 8486) to support these efforts and support this grant program. Legislation that provides technical assistance and capacity-building support to help underserved communities advance transformative and equitable infrastructure projects.

  • Announcing the Transit-Oriented Development Act of 2024 (HR 8486) a grant that would increase mobility, reduce pollution, and expand affordable transportation options.

  • Introducing H.R. 6111, the Pedestrian Hazard, Awareness and Safety Expansion (PHASE) Act, a grant program for cities and municipalities to implement pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
