Congresswoman Torres’ Statement on House Passage of Legislation in Response to Pending National Rail Shutdown

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) issued the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.J.Res. 100 and H.Con.Res. 119, legislation together that will address the threat of a rail shutdown and give rail workers the annual sick leave they deserve:

"I am a proud former union member. I am aware of how important the contract negotiation process is and how necessary it is for unions and their members to stand up for themselves. I worked at a job where I had to ask to use the restroom, where sick days were given but looked down upon, so I feel the pain of these workers who simply want to be sick when they are sick, or to take care of a loved one when they are ill.

"We should be supporting their fight, and I do not believe that Congress should be dictating the results of a union contract negotiations process. I am aware of, and deeply troubled by, the impact that a national rail strike would have, but I cannot in good conscience undermine our working men and women who are simply seeking dignity and respect. Our nation's economy cannot continue to be leveraged on the backs of the health care, sick leave, and safety issues of these workers.

"I supported the resolution to ensure better sick leave for these workers and will continue fighting to ensure paid sick leave for all workers."
