Congresswoman Torres Applauds House Vote to Send Respect for Marriage Act to President’s Desk

Washington, D.C. – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to send the Respect for Marriage Act to the president's desk for his signature. In response to the vote, Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) issued this statement:

"Love is love, and with today's vote, Congress has taken the long overdue step to protect marriage equality for millions of Americans," said Congresswoman Torres. "I have been married to my husband Louis for almost four decades, and I believe that same-sex marriages and interracial marriages should have the same protections that my own marriage does.

"The Respect for Marriage Act protects the fundamental right of marriage equality for these couples, who are friends, family, neighbors, colleagues, and community members. With this bill, we as a nation are sending the message that we will not tolerate any attacks on same-sex and interracial marriages and that we are more united than divided on protecting fundamental rights like marriage equality.

"While a conservative majority on the Supreme Court threatens the basic rights of millions of Americans, I will continue to defend the freedoms of people in the United States. But at least for today, love has won."
