Congresswoman Torres and Congressman Aguilar Announce City of Fontana Receives $19+ Million Federal Grant to Improve Safety for Pedestrians, Cyclists & Motorists

Fontana, CA — Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) and Congressman Pete Aguilar (CA-33) announced today the distribution of $19,808,986 in federal funding to the city of Fontana for the development of infrastructure improvements along Foothill Boulevard to dramatically enhance transit safety.

Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program, the funding will provide bike lanes, ADA-compliant sidewalks, ADA ramps, and updated signage to protect motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The Foothill Boulevard Safety Improvements project will also enhance transit equity in the Inland Empire with four public bus stops that directly connect to neighboring cities, county services, a Metrolink station, Ontario International Airport, Cal State San Bernardino, Chaffey College, numerous service providers, schools, homes, and job centers.

“Inland Empire families deserve and need transportation systems that are safe, walkable and accessible,” said Congresswoman Norma Torres. The Inland Empire is among the deadliest regions for transportation safety in the nation, but thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re bringing historic funding to our region to invest in comprehensive infrastructure improvements and safety. With projects like safety improvements for Foothill Boulevard, we can enhance transportation safety for Inland Empire residents, make transportation routes more accessible and comprehensive, and eliminate the confusion and chaos that put our families at risk.”

“I’m proud to work with Rep. Torres to deliver federal investments in the Inland Empire that will keep our roads safe, connect our community and make public transit more accessible,” said Congressman Pete Aguilar. “More than two years after it was signed into law, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law continues to provide local communities with resources that improve the quality of life for our residents. I will continue fighting to secure more investments that will benefit our community.”

"The City of Fontana is elated with the funding allocation of $19.8 million for the Foothill Blvd Safety Improvement Project. This initiative aims to significantly enhance safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists by implementing comprehensive infrastructure upgrades along Foothill Boulevard, a historic segment of Route 66 in Fontana. Such accomplishments are the result of collaborative efforts, and it requires a team with a shared vision. Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, and Congresswoman Norma Torres played a crucial role in securing the funding, and their dedication is greatly appreciated. This would not have been possible without the diligent efforts of our legislative partners. On behalf of the Fontana City Council and City Manager, we extend our gratitude," said Fontana Mayor Acquanetta Warren.

Congresswoman Torres & Congressman Aguilar both serve on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, which oversees government funding for transportation and other key infrastructure programs. Torres & Aguilar last year secured a $15 million RAISE grant for the city of Fontana to make streets and bike lanes safer and better connect residents to transportation services. Congresswoman Torres also introduced the Pedestrian Hazard, Awareness and Safety Expansion (PHASE) Act in November to address rising pedestrian accidents and fatalities in regions like the Inland Empire.
