Congresswoman Norma Torres Statement on the Passing of Civil Rights Icon Dolores Huerta

Ontario, CA — Today, Congresswoman Norma Torres (CA-35) released the following statement on the passing of Dolores Huerta:

“My heart is heavy as we mourn the loss of Dolores Huerta, a fearless leader whose courage changed this country and whose example changed what generations of Latinas believed was possible.

“I admired Dolores deeply. She stood up in spaces where Latinas like us were dismissed, underestimated, and told to wait our turn. She organized, she led, and she demanded that our voices carry weight in the decisions shaping our lives. For so many of us, her example made it easier to find our own voice and the courage to use it.

“Dolores understood that the people who feed this nation deserve to live with dignity. She helped farmworkers turn collective action into better wages, safer working conditions, and a powerful movement for justice. She challenged a country that depended on their labor while too often turning away from their suffering.

“My heart is with her family, her loved ones, and the generations of organizers who carry her teachings with them. Dolores gave so much of her life so that others could live with greater dignity and opportunity. May she rest knowing how profoundly she changed our country. Por siempre, sí se puede.”
