Congresswoman Norma J. Torres Responds to President Biden’s State of the Union

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) released the following statement in response to President Biden's first State of the Union Address:

"In his first State of the Union Address, President Biden highlighted the incredible progress his administration has made restoring American leadership on the world stage, and making real, tangible progress for working families here at home. That progress is more important now than ever as we stand with the Ukrainian people defending their democracy. As the president said: Democracy will prevail over autocracy.

I am glad the President also addressed the economic strain of inflation that many Americans are feeling even as we have the fastest economic growth in nearly 40 years. Decreasing everyday costs for working families, including those like prescription drugs, child care, and energy costs, will be essential to helping working families thrive in the Inland Empire. And I'm thankful the President outlined his plan to build on the progress we've made in the last year to finally lead us out of the Coronavirus pandemic, providing the leadership, hope, and resolve so many Americans are looking for after two crushing years of the virus upending our lives.

I look forward to continuing to work with the Biden Administration on my priorities including immigration reform, to ensure that we have an accessible pathway to citizenship, and to address the root causes of migration by combating corruption and violence in Central America. It is abundantly clear this Senate is not moving to pass comprehensive immigration reform, so I am calling on the president to use the powerful tools of his office, including executive orders, to address some of these challenges.

As President Biden said, "We are stronger today than we were a year ago, and we will be stronger a year from now than we are today." We still have a lot of work ahead of us, and I'm thankful for the president's leadership as we take on our country's greatest challenges. We have seen so much progress in the last year, and tonight President Biden reminded us why we elected him – for his ability to bring people together, and unite all Americans to make our nation stronger, fairer, and more prosperous for all."
