Chair Thompson Announces Congresswoman Torres as Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Vice Chair for 118th Congress
Washington, D.C. – Today, Chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) announced Rep. Norma Torres (CA-35) as a Vice Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force for the 118th Congress.
"Words without action are meaningless, and since I first got to Congress, I have pushed for common-sense gun safety laws to save lives. As a Vice Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, I will keep working with my colleagues to pass measures to prevent gun violence for the millions of Americans who have been affected by this national epidemic. Additionally, I will continue to fight to prevent the next tragedy both here at home and around the world," said Congresswoman Torres.
"Gun violence plagues our communities, and it takes strong, dedicated, and committed leaders to advance gun violence prevention policies in Congress," said Chair Thompson. "Rep. Torres is one of those leaders. She has a proven track record of not backing down from a tough fight and has demonstrated a willingness to pursue commonsense gun violence prevention measures in Congress. I am proud to have her as a Vice Chair of the Task Force and I look forward to working with Rep. Torres to address the scourge of gun violence."
The Gun Violence Prevention Task Force was founded in the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 when 20 students and 6 educators were slaughtered in a senseless act of violence. The Task Force numbered over 180 members of Congress in the 117th Congress. The Gun Violence Prevention Task Force played a leadership role in securing the most significant gun violence prevention legislation in 30 years with the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, higher funding to run the background checks program and research gun violence, and programs to break the cycle of violence.
