Torres Statement on Impeachment Inquiry of President Trump

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Norma J. Torres (D-CA) released the following statement on the opening of an impeachment inquiry of President Donald J. Trump:

"For hundreds of years of this great country's history, public servants like myself have taken an oath of office to protect and uphold the Constitution of the United States. That includes President Trump. Speaker Pelosi's announcement honors that oath by protecting our democracy from the dark forces of corruption.

"I have called for President Trump's impeachment since the day Special Counsel Mueller issued his report about election interference and obstruction of justice. This was not an easy decision for me, because impeachment is a serious step which should only be taken when the President has truly committed crimes and misdemeanors. Despite the gravity of impeachment, when the situation rises to that level, we have a responsibility to act upon our oath.

"This President knowingly accepted assistance from Russia to win the election. He obstructed justice to cover it up. He has used the office of the Presidency to enrich himself and his family. And he tried to use the power of the Presidency to pressure a foreign government to dig up dirt on a political opponent and influence the 2020 Presidential election. Enough is enough.

"The moment has come. We have begun the process to fulfill our constitutional responsibility. As a member of the Rules Committee, I vow to hold the President accountable should the committee meet to begin impeachment investigations."

Torres is a member of the House Rules and Appropriations Committees.
