Torres Retracts Statement About Law Enforcement

September 23, 2020
Press Release

POMONA – Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) issued the following statement today, retracting a prior press release.

“As the mother of a police officer and a former 9-1-1 emergency dispatcher, I have the greatest respect for the men and women of our law enforcement agencies. When two officers were brutally and senselessly ambushed and shot in Compton earlier this month, I wanted to issue a statement expressing my sorrow and fervent wish that the perpetrator of this outrage be brought to justice.  I have issued similar statements on other occasions when officers have been attacked.

“Most unfortunately, a response was drafted that included language concerning ongoing controversies involving improper police conduct that should not have been included. I did not read the release carefully enough and take complete and full responsibility. The words used offended members of a community I care deeply about at a time when it is already in duress. I regret that, and I retract the statement.”
