Only Central American Serving in Congress Praises Supreme Court Ruling to Uphold DACA

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35), who came to the U.S. from Guatemala at the age of five, released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's ruling to block the Trump's administration's attempt to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects nearly 800,000 immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from deportation, including 17,500 eligible recipients in California's 35th Congressional District:

"To all the Dreamers who've shared their inspiring stories with me, this joyous day is for you," Rep. Torres said. "Today's Supreme Court ruling sends a clear message that DACA recipients are Americans in every way – they are essential workers combatting COVID-19 on the frontlines; they are our family members; our neighbors; our co-workers – they are woven into every aspect of the American fabric. There is still much work to be done to ensure Dreamers are protected from deportation and have a pathway to citizenship. I urge President Trump to abandon this hateful attempt to end DACA once and for all. And to my colleagues in the Senate, I implore you to take up the House-passed the Dream and Promise Act and make DACA the law of the land."

Representative Torres is an original co-sponsor of H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019.
