Statement from Congresswoman Torres on 3rd Anniversary of January 6 Attack on U.S. Capitol
Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) released the following statement on the third anniversary of the January 6 insurrection at the United States Capitol during the certification of the 2020 presidential election results:
“On this day three years ago, a deadly group of insurrectionists attacked the U.S. Capitol building at the direction of the former president. I spent that horrific day face down in the House Chamber, fearing for my life. It was thanks to the brave men and women of the U.S. Capitol Police that no lawmakers were injured or killed that day.
“This attack was a violent, desperate attempt to destroy our democracy. Congress may have successfully certified the results of the 2020 presidential election that day, but extremist Republicans have since been hellbent on promoting a false, revisionist narrative of the January 6 insurrection.
“The insurrection and its legacy demonstrate the true intentions of the former president – who has been charged for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and remains a leader in the Republican party. He and his extremist followers continue to promote the obstruction of justice, incite fear, erode our institutions, twist facts, and cater to far-right conspiracy theorists. While my extremist colleagues seek to distract from the truth and undo the bipartisan work of the January 6 Select Committee, I remain committed to truth and justice as Ranking Member on the subcommittee that has oversight of the events surrounding January 6.
“This anniversary serves as a reminder that democracy and freedom cannot be taken for granted. It is our shared responsibility to protect our values and ensure our systems can prevail in the face of those who want to destroy our democratic institutions. January 6 remains a black eye on our democracy, but we must all look forward and focus on solutions for future generations – that is what is at stake.”
