New American Members of Congress Statement on the Passage of the American Dream and Promise Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Representatives Norma J. Torres (D-CA), Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), Salud Carbajal (D-CA), Jesús G. "Chuy" García (D-IL), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN), members of the Congressional New Americans Caucus, released the following statement on the passage of H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act. The landmark legislation provides permanent protection to our nation's Dreamers, as well as to Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) holders, allowing them to contribute fully to communities across the country while providing a pathway to citizenship.
"Yesterday, we acted to protect the American Dream for generations to come. As first-generation immigrants, our stories may be different, but the common thread that connects us is a nation that welcomed us and provided the remarkable opportunity to succeed. The passage of the American Dream and Promise Act reinforces those values. It makes it clear that if you work hard, stay on the right side of the law, and serve this nation honorably, you can earn a path to citizenship. This bill is Congress and America at its best and a true tribute to Immigrant Heritage Month. The Senate must now act, and we won't let up the pressure until this bill becomes the law of the land."
The Congressional New Americans Caucus is comprised of first-generation immigrants and provides a forum to educate all Members of Congress about issues related to New Americans and public service. In the 116th Congress, the most diverse Congress in history, Caucus members hail from Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, India, Taiwan, Ecuador, Somalia, and Cuba, among other countries.
