Congresswoman Torres Selects Winners of 2023 Congressional App Competition for California’s 35th District
Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) announced today the winners of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge for CA-35: siblings Alex and Melissa Lee of Pomona. This annual computer science competition, hosted by the U.S. House of Representatives, is open to all middle and high school students to encourage innovation in coding and inspire American youth to pursue careers in STEM fields.
This year, Congresswoman Torres’ office received a record 67 submissions to the competition. The winners, Alex and Melissa Lee of Pomona, were inspired by their volunteer work in the medical field. Their submission, “UrineFlo” is designed to make urine output measurements, a critical indicator for patient health, more accurate, less labor-intensive, and easier to access by medical providers. This app is a valuable function for the healthcare field and serves as a testament to the innovative and compassionate spirit of our community’s youth.
“Students across the 35th district demonstrated incredible talent and creativity in this year’s Congressional App Challenge,” said Congresswoman Torres. The innovation in each submission underscores not only the impressive technical abilities of our youth, but also highlights the crucial role STEM education continues to play in shaping the future. Congratulations to our winners and thank you to everyone who submitted an app this year, each submission demonstrated an impressive understanding of coding and an inspiring commitment to improving our community and the world.”
