Congresswoman Torres Commemorates 12th Anniversary of DACA
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) issued the following statement on the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:
"I arrived in the U.S. at the age of five, and I deeply empathize with the countless young immigrants who have shared a similar journey. These children deserve access to the same opportunities I had to become citizens and to build lives here in the United States. For 12 years, DACA has made our nation stronger, empowering migrant youth to succeed academically and economically,” said Congresswoman Norma Torres. "For the sake of the hundreds of thousands of Dreamers in the Inland Empire and across the country, Congress must do everything in our power to make DACA a permanent program that creates a pathway to citizenship."
Congresswoman Torres is a cosponsor of the American Dream and Promise Act, which would provide a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers.
"I am working in Congress to protect Dreamers across the country as well as other immigrant communities working to become citizens," continued Congresswoman Torres. "Ensuring there is a path to citizenship is important for our Dreamers. That is why I worked to introduce the Renewing Immigration Provisions of the Immigration Act of 1929, which makes a simple update to our registry law. My bill would update the registry eligibility cutoff date for the first time in over three decades and give millions who are our neighbors, friends, and family members, already living in the United States, a path to citizenship. I will continue to work in Congress to try to get sensible immigration reform passed to support our Dreamers."
