Youth Advisory Committee

The 2020 Program

The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is envisioned to provide high school students with a unique opportunity to acquire leadership skills in a professional environment.  The program will focus on aiding students to learn about the industries that are imperative to our local economy with an education-based experience to inspire our future leaders.

 

Composed of six (6) monthly informative sessions and six (6) tours, the program exposes students to the major industries within the 35th Congressional District.  Students will learn about transportation challenges, trade, education, law enforcement, health care, government and the legislative process. The program will begin in January and conclude in June. Sessions will be held on the second Tuesday and tours on the second Thursday of every month from 4:30-6:30pm. 

 

January: Orientation, Government and Law Enforcement + Tour

During the orientation portion YAC Members will receive detail information about the program, expectations and requirements needed to complete the program. Additionally, students will select their Chair and Vice chair for the Class of 2020. YAC Members will then participate in a briefing with law enforcement officials to discuss the rule of law.

February: Health Care & Wellness + Tour

YAC Members will participate in a tour of a local hospital or clinic to learn about the challenges of public health and access to care along with lifestyle wellness on water issues.

March: US Academy Explorer's Information Night + Tour

YAC Members will participate in the Congresswoman's US Academy Explorer Night Event. YAC members will put together an event for our local public safety explorer's program and be assigned to different logistical departments to learn more about event coordinating.

April: Congressional Institute’s Art Competition + Tour

YAC Members will participate in the nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent.

May: Legislative Discussion

YAC member will discuss policy concerns and formally address it to the Congresswoman.

Who can apply?

Interested high school students residing in the 35th Congressional District may apply. (Bloomington, Chino, Ontario, Montclair, Pomona, and southern portions of Fontana and Rialto).

How to apply?

Applications may be submitted starting Monday, September 30, 2019. Participants will be selected on a rolling basis until slots are filled. All applications are due by Friday, December 20, 2019.
